A Short Ghost Story For Burns Night.
On a cold winter’s night in the small village of Alloway, a chill wind whispered through the ancient trees, and the moon cast an eerie glow upon the ruins of the old Kirk. It was the anniversary of Robbie Burns’ birth, a night when the veil between the living and the dead seemed to grow thin.
A group of friends, daring each other with nervous laughter, decided to pay homage to the Scottish poet by reciting his verses near the Auld Kirk. As they gathered in a circle, the flickering candlelight danced with shadows, and the air became heavy with anticipation.
As the first line of “Tam o’ Shanter” echoed through the stillness, an unexpected presence seemed to join the group. Unseen footsteps shuffled around them, and a soft, spectral voice whispered along with their recital. The friends exchanged uneasy glances, but pressed on, thinking it was just their imagination playing tricks.
But then, a sudden gust extinguished the candles, plunging the group into complete darkness. A cold hand brushed against their shoulders, and an otherworldly figure materialized in the moonlight—a shadowy silhouette resembling Robbie Burns himself. His eyes glowed with an ethereal light, and a melancholic smile played on his lips.
The friends, frozen in fear, felt the temperature drop further as Burns’ ghostly presence seemed to envelop them. With a sorrowful sigh, he recited a verse they had never heard, a hauntingly beautiful ode to the afterlife and the fleeting nature of mortal existence.
And just as quickly as he appeared, the ghost of Robbie Burns vanished, leaving the friends trembling in the darkness. When they finally gathered the courage to relight their candles, they found themselves alone in the silence of the Auld Kirk, with only the distant howling of the wind as a reminder of the spectral encounter.
To this day, the villagers swear that on the anniversary of Robbie Burns’ birth, his ghost still roams Alloway, reciting verses in the night and reminding the living of the transient nature of life and the mysteries that linger beyond the mortal realm.
