The Draconid meteor shower will be visible in 2024 from October 6 to October 10, peaking on the night of October 7 into the early hours of October 8.
This meteor shower is unique because its best viewing occurs just after nightfall, making it more accessible to those who prefer not to stay up late into the night. In contrast to many other meteor showers, which are better seen in the pre-dawn hours, the Draconids can be observed in the evening.
To view the Draconids, you should look towards the constellation Draco, which will be located in the northern sky. The meteors appear to radiate from this point, although they can be seen all across the sky. The best viewing will occur when Draco is higher in the sky, so watching from a location in the Northern Hemisphere provides the most favorable conditions.
You don’t need any special equipment like telescopes or binoculars—just a wide, dark sky and patience. On average, the Draconids are expected to produce around 5 meteors per hour in 2024, but they are known for their unpredictability, and occasional meteor storms can occur. For instance, in 1933 and 1946, the Draconids produced thousands of meteors per hour.
While an event of that magnitude is not guaranteed, the chance of seeing some spectacular meteors always adds an extra layer of excitement.
For the best results, find a location far from city lights, lie down with a wide view of the sky, and give your eyes 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Stay warm and comfortable, as meteor watching can be a waiting game.
If you’re located in the Southern Hemisphere, the Draconids may still be visible, but they will be less pronounced as Draco sits lower on the horizon there.
In short, mark October 7–8, 2024 on your calendar and prepare for an enjoyable evening of meteor watching, with the potential for a surprise outburst from the erratic Draconids. Their unpredictable nature is part of the magic that makes this shower so special. .
