The Mowing Devil
The 17th-century pamphlet ‘The Mowing-Devil: or, Strange News out of Hartford-shire’ tells of a farmer who refused to pay a laborer to mow his field and swore he would rather the Devil mowed it. This story, possibly one of the first crop circle reports, reflects human fascination with the mysterious and unexplained in a time of agricultural and social change.
