4,000 Year-Old ‘Masked Goddess’ Statue Named National Treasure

A 4,000 year-old statue that was found in Nagano prefecture 14 years ago was officially designated a national treasure on Thursday by the Japanese government.Called Dogu, or “Masked Goddess,” the 34 centimeter, 2.7 kilogram clay figure was found almost in a complete form in Nagano’s Nakappara site on Aug. 23, 2000. The Council for Cultural Affairs recommended the statue be named a national treasure in March.
