In this viewpoint Hugh Montefiore suggests that many accounts of miraculous events in the lives of Christian saints resemble other accounts of paranormal phenomena. He explores anecdotes of three phenomena—stigmata, incense, and levitation—to provide examples of the kinds of paranormal experiences that might indicate holiness, devotion, or a close relationship with God. He provides accounts of the lives of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Avila, in particular. In addition to these detailed examples, the author also lists several other unexplained phenomena that arise in the stories of saints’ lives. Christians, the author says, might view these occurrences as miracles proving God’s existence; others might view them as evidence of other mystical forces or as a result of religious hysteria.
