Across the heather of Wheeldale Moor above Whitby runs an ancient paved causeway that some archaeologists say is Neolithic. Local folk call it Wade’s Causey, the work of a giant who wanted his wife to be able to go and milk the cow without sinking in the bog. Nearby, on the road to Loftus, a standing stone may be seen, which they call Wade’s Stone and is thought to mark the giant’s grave.
