A Biography of David Ash.

David Ash, the creation of acclaimed British horror novelist James Herbert, emerges as a compelling protagonist across a trilogy of supernatural thrillers. With a backdrop of chilling atmospheres and eerie settings, Ash’s character embodies a sceptical investigator whose rationality is tested by the inexplicable terrors he encounters. I actually prefer this fictional character to most real people. Just saying.

In “Haunted” (1988), readers are introduced to David Ash, a pragmatic investigator with a background in parapsychology. Tasked with three nights to decipher the mysteries of a remote country house, Ash’s scepticism is promptly challenged as he navigates the murky waters of a haunting. Serves him right for being cocky.. We’ve all been there…

Throughout the novel, Ash’s steadfast commitment to rational explanations clashes with the overwhelming evidence of malevolent spirits, leading him on a journey that blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural – Don’t you just hate it when that happens?

Continuing his odyssey, David Ash returns in “The Ghosts of Sleath” (1994), where he is called upon to investigate a series of disturbing phenomena plaguing the quaint village of Sleath. As he delves deeper into the murky history of the village, Ash uncovers a web of secrets and horrors lurking beneath its idyllic façade. With each revelation, Ash’s resolve is tested, and his understanding of the world is challenged by forces beyond comprehension. Also – there’s a watermill. It’s terrifying, although that might just be my opinion.

The culmination of David Ash’s saga unfolds in “Ash” (2012). He is drawn back to the haunting echoes of his past. Returning to the remote country house that once tormented him, Ash must confront the demons that have long haunted him while navigating the treacherous depths of his own psyche. In a gripping finale, Ash grapples with the darkness both within himself and the malevolent forces that threaten to consume him.

Throughout James Herbert’s trilogy, David Ash emerges as a multifaceted character, grappling not only with external threats but also with his internal struggles and personal demons. His journey is one of self-discovery, redemption, and ultimately, acceptance of the inexplicable forces that shape the world around him.

Anyway, enough of me trying to be all wordy and clever – I love David Ash. He’s such a complicated and well-rounded character – troubled, talented and wise.

I’ll leave you with some pearls of wisdom from the man himself – Enjoy!

  1. “I’ve seen a lot of strange things in my time, but I’ve never seen anything that couldn’t be explained by natural causes. Yet.”
  2. “Belief in the supernatural is just superstition. There’s always a rational explanation if you look hard enough. But sometimes, the truth is more terrifying than fiction.”
  3. “Fear is just a trick of the mind. Once you understand that, you can face anything. Or so I keep telling myself.”
  4. “The past has a way of catching up with us, no matter how hard we try to outrun it. It’s like a ghost that haunts our every step.”
  5. “Sometimes the things we fear the most are the things we refuse to acknowledge. But ignorance is not bliss; it’s a prison of our own making.”
  6. “There’s a fine line between scepticism and denial. Sometimes it’s easier to believe in nothing than to face the truth. But in the end, the truth always finds a way to reveal itself.”
