Walking along various stretches of the wall back in October ’23, we were reminded just how much our modern life is affected by what happened in the past. Roads made by Roman soldiers and their slaves still exist. Forts and settlements gave name to what are now massive towns, and as we are reminded by archeologists regularly, the Romans left so much rubbish everywhere they went – pottery, metal work, coins etc, we have a detailed knowledge of their lives and habits and haunts. Walking on, and touching, this amazing wall, stretching from coast to coast, built by hand by real living people, left us with a true sense of existing in a land which was “home” to others, many hundreds of years before…….
