Navigating the Depths of the Supernatural and Human Psyche

What if I told you….

…that we went to see Danny Robins’ play, ‘2:22’ and that it is a masterclass in storytelling that seamlessly weaves together elements of the supernatural and the complexities of the human psyche?

Well, we did, and it is!

I bought the tickets about six months prior, prompted by an advert on one social media platform or another, and had no knowledge at all of Danny, his “Uncanny” series of Podcasts and TV shows, or anything else about it. About a week before we went to The Lowry in Salford to watch, we realised that it was the one and same person who wrote the play, as we were sat listening to on his podcast – the one about Todmorden and the UFO sightings. Interest was now heightened.

On a wet night in November we arrived, duly ordered drinks, wandered around the magnificent building itself before, with some trepidation, sitting in our seats in the theatre itself. The setting is simple, the kitchen/dining room of a house. A big red LED clock continuously shows the passage of a speeded-up time, right the way through to – 2:22 and the start of the play.

As the narrative unfolds, it invites the audience into a world where time, trauma and the unknown, converge. Robins’ skilful storytelling shifts effortlessly between the supernatural and the psychological, engaging the audience with a mystery that transcends the confines of conventional time, creating a captivating and thought-provoking experience.

Robins introduces elements that evoke both wonder and unease, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats as they navigate the mysterious occurrences. The supernatural elements act as a mirror, reflecting the internal struggles and traumas of the characters.

Robins excels in portraying the vulnerability of his characters, grounding the supernatural elements in the intricacies of human experience. The audience is compelled to empathize with the struggles, fears, and desires of the characters, creating a more profound connection to the unfolding events. Robins avoids caricatures, presenting individuals with genuine complexities, making their journey through the supernatural both relatable and heart-wrenching.

The success of “2:22” is bolstered by a strong ensemble ( Joe Absolom led the cast when we visited) quartet that delivered weighted performances. Each actor brought authenticity to their role, contributing to the overall immersive experience.  Atmospheric impact is heightened by the effective use of very simple sound and lighting. The production team employs these elements strategically to create tension, enhance suspense, and evoke a sense of otherworldliness.

In “2:22”, Danny Robins has crafted a theatrical experience that transcends the boundaries of time and genre. The play’s ability to seamlessly intertwine the supernatural with profound explorations of the human psyche showcases Robins’ mastery as a storyteller. From its multi-layered narrative to the authenticity of its characters, “2:22” stands as a compelling testament to the power of live theatre to engage, challenge, and haunt the imagination long after the final curtain falls.

Go see.
