I’m still so wrapped up in Welsh folklore and mythology after our recent MT Roadtrip to Wales that I almost forgot to write up an article about the Buck Moon!
So here it is in all it’s lunar glory, especially for all my witchy sisters and brothers and fellow moon gazers – enjoy!
Tonight’s full moon, known as the Full Buck Moon, rises in the steadfast sign of Capricorn, bringing a grounded yet transformative energy. The Full Buck Moon gets its name from Native American traditions, referring to the time of year when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads, representing growth and renewal.
Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, is all about discipline, responsibility, and long-term goals. This alignment suggests a time to reflect on our ambitions and the structures we’ve built in our lives. It’s a perfect moment to assess where we are, make realistic plans, and consider the legacy we want to leave behind.
This Full Buck Moon is a powerful time for various rituals and traditions. One meaningful practice is to create a vision board. Since Capricorn’s energy favors tangible results and clear plans, crafting a vision board can help solidify your aspirations. Gather images and words that resonate with your goals, and place them on a board where you can see them daily. This visual reminder keeps you focused and motivated.
Another tradition is to write a letter to your future self. Capricorn’s influence encourages thinking long-term, so take this opportunity to jot down your hopes, dreams, and advice for yourself. Seal it and set a date to open it, perhaps at the next Full Buck Moon or another milestone. This ritual fosters a deeper connection with your personal growth and journey.
Feasting is a delightful way to honor this full moon. Capricorn’s earthiness invites us to enjoy hearty, grounding foods. Consider dishes that incorporate seasonal produce and comfort foods that nourish the body and soul. A feast might include roasted root vegetables, whole grains like quinoa or barley, and rich stews or casseroles. Freshly baked bread, symbolizing sustenance and the fruits of our labor, can be a wonderful addition.
For dessert, think about incorporating ingredients that symbolize abundance and growth. A berry pie or a cake adorned with nuts can be both delicious and symbolic. To drink, consider herbal teas like chamomile or peppermint, which promote relaxation and reflection, or perhaps a glass of red wine, celebrating the fruits of the earth., or mead if you, like me, prefer something a little sweeter.
Rituals can also be simple and personal. A quiet moonlit walk, journaling under the moon’s glow, or meditating with crystals associated with Capricorn, such as onyx or garnet, can help you connect deeply with the moon’s energy. Lighting a white or silver candle and focusing on your intentions can be a powerful way to channel the moon’s light into your own life.Incorporating elements of nature is another beautiful tradition. You might even leave a bottle of water or something stronger out to absorb the moons energy and use it in your rituals later.
Collecting stones, leaves, or flowers during the day and arranging them into a mandala or altar can create a sacred space for your rituals. This practice honors both the earth and the moon, reflecting the interconnectedness of all life.
The Full Buck Moon in Capricorn is a time for practical magic, where dreams are not just envisioned but also structured and nurtured into reality. Whether through elaborate rituals or simple reflections, this full moon invites us to ground our aspirations in reality, celebrating both our progress and the journey ahead.
