Cerridwen brewed this potion in the hopes of imparting these gifts to her son, Afagddu, who was believed to lack the qualities of beauty and talent that she desired for him. The brewing of the potion was a meticulous process that took a year and a day, reflecting the patience and care Cerridwen invested in her magic.

Gwion Bach, a young boy hired to tend the cauldron, accidentally tasted a few drops of the potion. This seemingly minor mistake had enormous consequences:

Realizing the gravity of his accidental acquisition, Cerridwen pursued Gwion, who used his newfound powers to transform himself into various forms—such as a hare, a fish, and a bird—in an effort to escape. Cerridwen, in turn, chased him using her own magic, shifting into forms like a hound, a fish, and a bird.

The chase ended when Gwion, seeking refuge, transformed into a grain of wheat. Cerridwen, desperate and not recognizing the grain’s true identity, consumed it. To her astonishment, Gwion was reborn as her own son, Taliesin. Taliesin grew up to become one of the most celebrated bards and poets in Welsh lore, embodying the very wisdom and poetic gifts Cerridwen had intended for her son.
